Exploring Your Digital Portfolio

Image
With everything shifting online, it has become no question that a digital portfolio is key in today's day and age. This fall semester, I took a General Education course specializing in building my digital portfolio with Professor Calderwood at Stockton University . In just one semester, I learned how to build my own personal learning network, improve my LinkedIn and produce creative content using various websites such as Blogger.com, Prezi, Animoto, Google Tour builder, Canva and more. This course had a variety of lesson plans and offered hands-on experience for the real world. The lesson plans ranged from doing hands-on assignments where we were able to produce content for our digital portfolios to group projects where we analyzed other projects in order to improve our own. Furthermore, Professor Calderwood would often have guest speakers join our Zoom calls to speak about the working world. Through this, I learned a multitude of things, ranging from how my major ca...

How To Build a Better Website

Image
Website building is one of the most crucial components of digital marketing today. You can advertise all you want, but if your main website is hard to look at and navigate, then all that effort put into advertising renders it useless! Let's look at how a better website can be built.       First of all, it's important to ensure that your website has a clean  and aesthe tically pleasing design . Too much clutter and your users will find the website difficult to look at and use. This can be achieved by spreading out your content across the website. Be sure to utilize pages and clickable images! To make navigation easy for your users, use a lot of call-to-action buttons. This way, your users know exactly what they are doing on your website. To guarantee an aesthetically pleasing design,  make sure you are keeping up with the trends.  A few examples would be plenty of whitespace, split screen content and tailored illustrations. Whit...

Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality in The Psychology Field

Image
Technology has come a long way since it was first developed. From staring at bulky, slow computers to high tech, immersive experiences such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)! Sometimes VR allows you to dive into a whole different world without physically leaving the one you're in now, and other times it allows you explore the very world we live in right now... from different perspectives.       This is a great advancement for many fields. When people think about VR they often think about the Oculus , which is quite pricey and not as accessible to the general public. However, the technology for VR does not always have to be expensive. For example, with Google Cardboard , one could place their phone screen into the affordable device to experience VR.  In Houston, Google Cardboard has given children the opportunity to tour different hospitals before being physically going there, which gives them a sense of comfort.  Th...

How To Ace Your Next Interview

Image
I have one more semester before I get my psychology degree, which means I have been looking into internships! I hope to have an internship set by the end of this year. To achieve this goal, I have been applying to many different jobs on LinkedIn as well as Indeed  which means that I have also been preparing myself for interviews. I have done a couple interviews before, mostly for minimum wage jobs in the food and retail industry but the following tips will help you ace your next interview, no matter what job you're applying for.      One question that I've been asked at every job interview is "why do you want this job?". The best way to answer this is to just be honest and clearly articulate why the job stood out and how it resonates with you . This is a great opportunity to compliment their products/company achievements, include why you believe you'd be a good fit for the company and why the company is a good fit for you. Ta...

How To Repair a Social Media Slip Up

Image
I have written a lot of blog posts about social media and how to positively navigate it, but what happens when you do have a slip up? Patricia Crawford from California knows what that is like.      First of all, who exactly is Patricia Crawford? Patricia Crawford is a former guidance counselor at Rubidoux High School. Crawford was fired for her offensive, racist and politically incorrect comments on a co-worker's Facebook post. It was enough to make her entire community uncomfortable, especially since she was a guidance counselor, a job that has no room for racial bias. Crawford was then assigned a court date and terminated from her job.  Moving forward, how should one go about fixing a slip up like this? It's difficult to do so, especially when a quick Google search on Crawford's name now reveals her racial biases.      Let's take Patricia Crawford's case for example and use the tips provided by Josh Ochs' "Light, ...

Using Social Media Without Compromising Your Mental Health

Image
It has been proven that social media does have an impact on mental health . However, how it affects your mental health depends on how you go about using it. The book "Light, Bright and Polite" by Josh Ochs offers advice on how to navigate social media in hopes of impressing colleges or future employers. In chapter three, Ochs talks about those strategies, however, I noticed these strategies are not limited to keeping your digital footprint clean. They can also help look after your mental health while you surf the web and scroll through apps. The book states to use social media in a positive manner. Complaining online puts negativity out onto the internet for others to see which may impact your followers (and it looks bad to future employers). Putting out positive thoughts will help motivate your followers and you can feel good knowing you are doing so. This also builds your personal brand as others will view you in a positive light. Moving on, do not permanentize things. Anyt...

How To Have An Effective Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation

Image
I have been doing presentations for as long as I can remember; elementary school, middle school, high school & college (and I'm sure the presentations don't stop after college)! Presentations are a great way to discuss an idea or get a message across to a large group of people. It is an important skill to have, no matter what age you are which is probably why it was taught so early on in school. Anybody can make a couple of PowerPoint slides, but how can you ensure that your presentation is effective ? This is how: 1. Use an eye-catching template. Having an eye-catching template will help your audience stay focused on your presentation. Nobody wants to look at a blank and boring slide for the entire presentation time. 2. Sprinkle in transitions but don't over-do it. Too many transitions in a PowerPoint presentation reminds me of fourth grade when we first started learning how to use them. It's tacky, unprofessional and distracting. Use it to highlight a slid...
